U.S. Steel approves nearly $3 billion investment in Pennsylvania manufacturing facility

United States Steel Corporation has approved a nearly $3 billion investment in a new hot strip mill at its Mon Valley Works facility in Pennsylvania, significantly expanding production capacity and modernising its steel manufacturing operations.

Announced on 22 October 2026, the project will see the construction of a new hot strip mill at the company’s Edgar Thomson Plant near Pittsburgh.

The investment is expected to increase annual production capacity from approximately 2.2 million to 3.5 million US tons, while introducing advanced manufacturing technologies designed to improve production efficiency and reduce waste.

Construction will begin once the necessary permits have been secured, with initial production anticipated in late 2029.

Modernising steel production

The new facility will replace ageing equipment with modern steelmaking technology, enabling U.S. Steel to expand the range of products manufactured at the site.

A hot strip mill processes steel slabs into thinner coils used across several major industries, including automotive manufacturing, construction and appliance production.

The planned development will incorporate advanced walking beam furnaces and an in-line slab sizing press to improve the efficiency of the steel production process.

According to U.S. Steel, these technologies will help reduce fuel consumption, eliminate an existing cutting stage and minimise scrap generation.

The improvements are also expected to provide greater flexibility in meeting customer requirements while maintaining product quality and reliability.

Strengthening American manufacturing

The investment represents a significant commitment to the future of steelmaking in Pennsylvania’s Mon Valley region.

David Burritt, President and Chief Executive Officer of U.S. Steel, described the project as an opportunity to introduce advanced technology, develop new manufacturing capabilities and strengthen the company’s long-term competitiveness.

The company also highlighted the wider economic importance of the development for local businesses, employees and the region’s industrial supply chain.

The new mill is intended to strengthen U.S. Steel’s position across automotive, appliance and line pipe markets, where demand for high-quality steel products continues to shape manufacturing requirements.

Investing in long-term production capacity

With initial operations expected in 2029, the new hot strip mill will form a central part of U.S. Steel’s plans to modernise its manufacturing capabilities.

The project will increase production capacity while introducing equipment designed to improve resource efficiency and operational performance.

The investment reflects the continued importance of advanced manufacturing technology in supporting the competitiveness and long-term development of the steel industry.
